Maluku still faces the problem of Open Defecation. The province has 1,657,000 population, of which 187,539 are children, but only 62.39% of its population has access to improved sanitation.
25.2% has no access to a toilet at all. School toilet facilities regarded as being in good condition only reach 25.50%.
The effect of poor sanitation contributes to the death of children in Maluku up to 36 per 1,000 child birth and diarrhea incidence rate of 1.80% in children. Poor sanitation in Maluku also contributes to a stunting rate of 40.6% in children.
