East and West Kalimantan still faces the problem of Open Defecation. The province has 3,970,000 population, of which 391,308 are children, but only 75.93% of its population has access to improved sanitation.

The effect of poor sanitation contributes to the death of children in East and West Kalimantan up to 21 per 1,000 child birth and diarrhea incidence rate of 1.50% in children. Poor sanitation in East and West Kalimantan also contributes to a stunting rate of 27.6% in children.
